Repeated infection of pigs with a small virus having enterovirus-like property

A strain of cytopathic virus was isolated from 2-month-oid pigs, newly introduced for nutritional experiments in 1989. After very cold days continued, these pigs showed fever (39.5-39.7 deg C), nasal discharge, diarrfioea and loss of appetite for 4 days. Rectal swabs taken from the pigs and were inoculated to a established cell line, KSEK6 derived from swine embryo kidney. The physicochemical property of the representative virus strain, SW/K89, was very similar to that of enterovirus except a lightbuoyant density in CsCI solution, showing 1.22 - 1.26g/cm~3. Sero-surveillance was conducted with sera taken from pigs in our farm for 11 months. It was shown that this virus had infected all pigs in multiple and cyclic mode through the year. The duration of highly immune states was relatively short which is dissimilar to that of porcine enteroviruses.
