Infections with enierotoxic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Clostridium perfringens type C cause significant problems in pig breeding farms. E. coli enterotoxicosis and necrotic enteritis (NE) affect piglets in their early days of life. By Moon and Bunnthe main virulent antigens of ETEC are F4, F5, F6 and heat-labile Enterotoxin. The most important virulent antigens of Clostndium perfringens are the proteintoxins and for type C the beta-toxin. Through the effect of the beta-toxin the enterocytes of the piglet intestine will be damaged and necrotic lesions will result. The beta-toxin goes over to the blood and the piglets get an enterotoxemia. Active protection by vaccination is impossible. The vaccination of sows and the transmission of antibodies via the colostrum and the milk is an effective way to protect the piglets against both diseases. A combined inactivated vaccine has been developed on the basis of whole bacterial cells and different virulent antigens. The E. coli component consists of whole bacterins which are enriched with the virulence antigens F4, F5, F6, LT The Clostndia component consists of 6-toxoid from Clostridium perfringens type C.
