Effects of meat meal use in feeds on gastric ulcer development

Gatroesophageal ulcer currently has become a major problem in pig production, affecting more and more animals proportional to the degree of industrialization implemented today into swine production. There are a lot of factors influencing ocurrence of this condition; genetic, management, pathological and nutritional factors, but nowadays it is considered that nutritional factors have a higher influence in the ulceration process than others. The analytical characteristics of several feedstuffs, including meat meal, due to its high free radical content (expressed as Peroxide Index), were reviewed, which is capable of damaging epitlelial layer of non-glandular gastric mucosa. Animals: 21,132 commercial hybrids pigs were used; 8,557 included in treatedgroup and 12,575 included in control group. All animals were from 8 commercial farms, except two batches (one treated and one control) from a multiplyer farm, and all were fattened in normal conditions from 20 Kg to 100 Kg,, housed in conventional buildings with 3 X 3,5 m pens (0,7 m~2/animal) with partial slat, and feeded ad libitum. All buildings were managed in all in-all out system.
