OCCURRENCE OF BRACHYSPIRA HYODYSENTERIAE AND BRACHYSPIRA PILOSICOLI AND ASSESSMENT OF RISK FACTORS IN SWITZERLAND

Swine dysentery and porcine intestinal spirochaetosis are widespread enteric diseases caused by the spirochaetes Brachyspira (B.) hyodysenteriae and B. pilosicoli. An infection due to one of these organisms not only causes diarrhea but also poor growth and suboptimal feed conversion. Particularly weaners and fattening pigs are affected. Little is known about the epidemiology of these infections and their importance in Switzerland. Diagnosis so far has been based on clinical symptoms and culture of the agent. In Switzerland, PGR confirmation was not done until now. The aims of this study are to determine risk factors for an outbreak of these two diseases and the occurrence in Switzerland.
