The ideal heat integrated distillation column (HIDiC) is a highly interactive and non-linear process, which necessties efficient nonlinear control methods for the process operation. An efficient steady state model is proposed for the fastsimulation of the process. A nonlinear process model-based controller, derived in the framework of generic model control, is designed and applied to the process. Simulations show that the controller outperforms PI controllers in operation of the idealHIDiC. Furthermore, the regulatory performances are significantly better than those of linear model-based controllers, indicating the preference of using the controller to operate the ideal HIDiC.
