The secondary losses in axial flow compressor are amongst major contributor to the losses incurred in the compressor. Recent research in the use of three-dimensional blade designs incorporating end-bends, sweep and dihedral have highlighted the advantage of 3-D blades in improved stage loading, efficiency, stable operating range and reduction in noise levels. This study is aimed at improving the understanding of the effect of "sweep" on the losses by experimentally studying the 30° parabolically forward swept blades in an axial flow compressor stage. Straight and swept Rotors as well as Stators of same sizes and profiles have been designed for comparative study. Study of combinations straight and swept rotors with straight and swept stators was carried out and their performances have been compared. The noise characteristic for the swept blades has also been studied as an additional parameter. Newly designed swept blades were found to be better in terms of pressure rise, losses and noise level.
