Numerical Study for Effects of Pin Fin Shapes on Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics in Rectangular Channel

A three-dimensional computation is conducted to simulate the flow and heat transfer process in a rectangular channel embedded with two rows of circular, similar-drop-shaped, elliptical, and drop-shaped pin fins in staggered arrangement. The velocity fields, pressure fields, temperature fields and the local convective heat transfer coefficients are obtained and the enhancement of heat transfer and the pressure loss characteristics with different fin pin arrays are compared. It is found that the pressure loss of drop-shaped pin fins array is 44.1%, 70.5% and 79.8% of the former three pin fins array while the average heat transfer coefficient on the uniform heat flux wall decreases 18.5%, 12.4% and 3.8% compared with the former three pins array, respectively. As far as the specific friction loss is concerned, the value for drop-shaped pin fins array is about 52.1%, 82.0% and 84.7% of the former three pin fins array. So that the drop-shaped pin fins arrays is a promising alternative configuration to circular pin fins array.
