ENOVAL - Low Pressure System Technologies for Ultra High Bypass Ratio Engines

Aviation is confronted with major challenges on account of ever stricter requirements and shrinking resources. The European aviation industry and research has therefore defined ambitious objectives ahead of its time for future air traffic, while the European Commission has initiated extensive technology programmes. Aero engines have to provide a large part of the requisite improvements. This paper provides an overview of the ENOVL (ENgine mOdule VALidators) technology programme, which completes the roadmap of the Level 2 projects in the European 7th Framework. ENOVAL focuses on the low pressure system of ducted turbofans and aims to provide technologies for bypass ratios up to 20. The aims are a further reduction in fuel consumption by up to 5% and noise emission by 1.3 EPNdB. Focal points of the technology development are the fan, intermediate case, variable area fan nozzle, acoustic treatments, power gearbox, high speed low pressure compressor as well as the conventional and high speed low pressure turbine. The most important technologies are validated in a total of 18 rig tests up to a technology readiness level of 5 (component validation in relevant environment). The technologies are to be available for the next generation of aero engines with an entry into service from 2025. The ENOVAL programme has been in progress since October 2013 and is set to end in July 2018. Numerous tests have been completed, these predominantly validating the designs.
