In the paper the cohesive soil layer compaction process was investigated. The laboratory tests were carried out using computer controlled stand simulating single static drum working process under plane strain conditions. The results of experiments using single rigid drum, both driven and towed, are presented. The influence of the slip value on the generated drawbar-pull is discussed. This traction characteristics turned out to be essential for proper understanding and simulation of the working process of the two drum static roller, obeying one driven and one towed cylinder. Finally, the working processes using the two drum static roller (with one driven and one towed drum) were investigated. The variation of the compaction effect was observed depending whether the driven or the towed drum was used as the first one. The difference in the structure of the compacted layer and the developed drawbar-pull was observed.
