Using Mobile Code and the Internet to Implement Value-Added Services for Ubiquitous Embedded Systems

In this paper, we will describe a flexible, yet relatively simple mobile code approach for implementing diverse value-added services for ubiquitous embedded systems. These services allow us to integrate embedded systems into the existing information infrastructure. We will first describe the CUES system that we use as a platform to implement the services. After that, we will present two examples of value-added services: a TV guide service for a VCR and a software update service for a printer. The main advantage in our approach is that the embedded system itself can remain simple, although it implements complex, flexible, and adaptive value-added services. Furthermore, embedded system manufacturers can design these services in a way that they find optimal. Although we use a single device to control embedded systems, it can also remain relatively simple. Finally, software updates are simple to implement, and it is hence possible to customize services, even in systems that have already been released.
