Whether sealed or flooded, stationary batteries present a potentially large liability. Since these batteries contain sulfuric acid and lead, materials classified as extremely hazardous, the resulting battery discharge during its lifetime exposes the customer to the very real possibility of a hazardous materials spill, especially in the event of a fire. This threat has alarmed government officials and local agencies to more vigorously enforce the regulations requiring spill containment.
