Six Flags America, an amusement park in Largo, Maryland, built a new roller coaster employing linear induction motor technology (LIM). The coaster accelerates cars to 60 miles per hour in just over 3 seconds. During this acceleration phase, real power demand peaks at 3500 kW and reactive power demand peaks at 5375 kVAR. Without compensation, excessive voltage drops would occur adversely impacting ride performance and exceeding utility flicker criteria for adjacent customers.
