The use of thermochemical diffusion and surface coatings in the metalworking and manufacturing industry is widespread and has had a significant impact on improving product life in applications ranging from gears to die casting and hot forging tools. A range of processes has been developed and this paper briefly outlines the types available and describes the development of a new low temperature thermochemical surface treatment which has the potential to significantly increase the performance of metal parts in a wide range of applications.
