Risk communication in the russian provinces: findings from in-depth expert interviews

The russian Federation is a country with great diversity and manifold cultural peculiarities on its large territory. The paper attempts to describe risk percpetions in the Russian province, a topic not yet touched by the risk researchers. The first distinction, between megalopolises and little towns, European and Asian parts of Russia, was suggested by the authors in early 1997 and reflected in a series of publications of the Group for Risk research and in lectrers at several universities in Moscow. This paper is the next step in suggesting new distinctions and building a social theory of risk communication. It is based on "in-depth expert interviews" in different parts of the Russian provinces and represents the first risk communication study in the provinces, "the largest a nd most potent" as well as "wildest" parts of Russia, as regards capital and infrastructure.
