Some reflections on using IT in IT teaching

Information Technology (IT) has supported the development and promotion of many computer-aided learning activities. However, IT support in learning IT itself has not really been fully exploited in every possible fields of IT. IT support in IT learning has also not been radically different from IT support in non-IT learning. Computer supported collaborative activities and dynamically generated cases for IT learning have scarcely been described. This paper further elaborates on our 10-yearexperience in using an information system-based simulation and gaming system in supporting the teaching of an essential IT subject. The course content has undergone many changes with the advancement of IT. With the simulation and gaming system, the teaching approach has also evolved from one of purely lecture-based learning to activity-based learning. The supporting simulation and gaming system has also evolved towards an IT-intensive collaborative learning environment. Feedback from students has been encouraging and we are carrying out further developments of the system to allow global access and extensions to cover other areas of IT.
