This paper represents part of a review that has been carried out of the spatial variability of geological systems with respect to the selection and characterization and the performance assessment (PA) of potential disposal sites for the deep disposal of radioactive waste. Spatial variability is discussed with references to its significance in crystalline and sedimentary rocks in terms of their structure and their groundwater flow systems, including the larger-scale spatial variability that may be present caused by a sedimentary depositional environment. Questions are posed also as to its significance in defining potentially suitable deep disposal environments and general conclusions are presented related to the various types of spatial variability, including geochemical aspects, that are likely to require consideration. The most important conclusion is probably that it is the geological history of a site that is likely to be the most important factor affecting its variability.
