Many decontamination methods have been developed over the years to deal with the particular concerns of nuclear decontamination. The Idaho Nuclear Technology and Engineering Center (INTEC) has been actively involved in the investigation, development and testing of decontamination methods. During the development some criteria has been developed for evaluation of the best decontamination method for a particular decontamination or D&D project. Two major divisions of decontamination technologies are chemical and non-chemical methods. Chemical technologies are divided into the type of reactions produced in the target system. Non-chemical processes generally are divided into the type of mechanisms they use, such as blasting or scrubbing. Results on 17 different chemical and 16 different non-chemical decontamination methods tested at INTEC are discussed in this paper. In addition to the description of various decontamination methods, a discussion on the process of gaining operator acceptance of new technologies is included.
