A pilot deployment of a horizontal submerged array is described. This is a step towards developing the ability to design three-dimensional moored arrays to serve as platforms for oceanographic measurements in the upper ocean. No method previouslyexisted to collect upper ocean time series on a grid with horizontal and vertical resolution of 1m to 100m which can be used to address unresolved questions about the physics, biology, chemistry, and optics of the upper ocean. As a fundamental steptowards filling this gap, a horizontal array was designed, built, and deployed, both to support learning about the operational aspects of these platforms and to provide time series measurements. This effort has demonstrated the survivability andperformance of the array and show it to be a viable measurement platform.
