Due to the tautomerism of vinyl alcohol monomer, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) can be obtained not by the direct polymerization but by the saponification of ester-family precursors. During the saponification of PVPi, branches are effectively removed by the substitution of hydroxyl groups. In short, PVA is linear crystallizable polymer that is free from branching structure. To control the molecular parameters of PVA, therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effects of polymerization conditions on the molecular parameters of resulting PVA.
