In situ bioremediation of a highly organic contaminated soil.

This study is focused on the use of bioremediation as teh primary method of decontamination for a soil contaminated with industrial waste oils. The area from which the samples were taken was used as a disposal site for oily. wastewater for a period of more than 20 years. The study was performed in two phases. The first phase utilized a control condition and three experimental conditions: anoxic condition: aerobic condition with very little mixing; and aerobic condition with a high mixing rate. The samples were tested using Gas Chromatography (GC). After 60 days of testing results indicated a significant reduction in the amount of contamination present. The second phase of the study focused on quantifying the reduction of contamination due to biological activity. An apparatus was designed that pumped air through the soil and a series of traps. The traps and the soil were then analyzed for TPH and BTEX and a comparison of the contamination level aided in the quantificationof biological activity.
