Performance comparison of spot-welded, adhesive bonded, and self-piercing riveted aluminum joints

Aluminum alloys are being exploited for reducing the weight of automobiles in the ongoing efforts to improve energy efficiency. This study compares the performance of three joining methods, namely, spot welds, self-piercing rivets, and adhesive bonded, for aluminum AA5754-0 plate. Adhesive performance is also compared with three alloys; AA5754-0 which is a rolled sheet, extruded C210-T6, and cast A356-T6. Non-reinforced lap-shear joints were tested both quasi-statically and dynamically to compare the peak load before failure and total energy absorbed by the joint. In all cases, the aluminum samples had a protective coating applied at the mill. It is found that the spot welded joint is the strongest among the three joining methods studied in both the static and dynamic cases. Joint with self-piercing rivet is the next strongest in the static case, performing about the same as the cast aluminum adhesive joint. Under dynamic test conditions, there is a significant improvement in all joints except the self-piercing rivet. The rolled aluminum samples, weakest in static testing, is the strongest in dynamic testing. At the highest test speed of 5.12 m/s (11.3 MPH), the performance of all self-piercing rivet, and the C210-T6 and A356-T6 adhesive joints are about the same.
