In congested urban areas it is becoming increasingly necessary to monitor the effects of new construction on existing tunels in order to minimise damage and the risk of injury to the public. Relative and absolute movements of the existing tunnels are commonly monitored for this purpose. The systems generally used to determine deformation utilise one or more of optical, electronic or mechanical means. This paper considers the common and differing problems, advantages and limitations of these various systems. It is shown that selection and design of a system for in tunnel monitoring requires a clear idea of which parameters best describe the tunnel or utility performance, the environment to be encountered and the imitations of the various systems that might be used. Observations and suggestions are made as to the key factors to be considered in selecting a monitoring system for use in existing or recently excavated tunnels.
