Field measurements and instrumentation in the 20th century

Field measurements have contributed significantly to advancements in the state-of-the-art of geotechnical engineering in the 20~(th) century. A general review of developments in field instrumentation during this period is presented. Specific areas in which instrumentation has played an important role are identified. Problems that have been encountered are pointed out and the principal accomplishments are summarized. Developments in instruments and measurement technology are discussed briefly.
