The Courtyard of the British Museum is being redeveloped as a result of the relocation of the British Library. Central to this scheme is the development of a basement adjacent to the historically significant Reading Room. This paper considers the evolution of a construction method, using jet grouting beneath the weak concrete footings of the Reading Room, based on the use of sophisticated site investigation methods in conjunction with finite element analysis. Consequently the instrumentation used and monitoring methods adopted during construction are addressed and the problems and advantages of the overall system evaluated.
