The presentation and interpretation of field measurement data is the ultimate purpose of any data acquisition system. Highly customized displays with animated graphics that depict the actual project site are the best way to present measurement data in a concise and complete manner. Rapid development software tools have greatly simplified the task of creating such custom graphical interfaces. Once created, these interfaces can be easily published on a corporate Intranet network or the Internet, allowing visual access to the data from almost anywhere. Many visual programming languages have built-in data extraction mechanisms that allow easy access to the project data when stored in an open database format. The advantages of using off-the-shelf components in graphical interfaces are discussed, as well as the subjects of data latency and polling frequencies as they relate to user interface refresh rates and responsiveness.
