A 3m diameter tunnel was constructed in London Clay to pass under an existing masonry arch tunnel of the London Underground's Metropolitan Line railway at Euston Square station. Initial assessments of the risk in constructing the tunnel were conducted. To verify the assumptions used in the analysis, instruments were instlaled to monitor movements in the masonry arch tunnel during construction. Displacement data for the masonry arch tunnel were obtained by survey methods up to 6 months after construction to observe the movements. The objective of this paper is to present a study of the magnitude and form of the responses of the masonry arch tunnel to an underground construction and to assess the adequacy of the available predictive methods.
