Automatic assembly generation methods generally work in two steps: first, generation of all admissible assembly sequences and then selection of the optimal solution. In this process, the main obstacle is the combinatory explosion of solutions and therefore a prohibitive determination time. An original method of direct generation of the optimal assembly sequence from the list of product admissible operations is presented. It is based on the Heuristic Research and elaborates in real time the optimal solution according to some single or multiple criteria and in function of the product components really available. Three optimal criteria are taken into account: parallelism, structure and time. The selected solution is then used in a flexible cell assembly control system, which assigns in real-time assembly operations to assembly stations in function of the actual assembly shop state. System is reactive to disruptions such as failure, component shortage... The method is dead-lock free.
