Starting in late 1999, approximately 5000 tonnes per day of Carbon Dioxide (CO_2) will be pumped into an oil reservoir in southeastern Saskatchewan, Candada, to produce an estimated minimum of 19 million m~3 incremental oil. The CO_2 will be transported by pipeline 330 km from the Great Plains Synfuels Plant in Beulah, North Dakota to Weyburn Field in Saskatchewan. The Synfuels Plant, operated by DakotaGasification Company, is the United States' first commercial size synthetic fuels plant based on coal conversion. Started in 1984, the plant currently converts 16200 tonnes of lignite coal daily into 3.54 million m~3 of pipeline quality synthetic natural gas, 900 tonnes of anhydrous ammonia and other by products. Weyburn field was discovered in 1954.
