A tongue analyzer of Chinese medicine based on color image processing is described, with which an evaluation of tongue properties such as tongue and tongue-covering tones, tongue-covering thickness and tongue moisture, can be automatically made. It consists of an imaging camera, two standard lamps, and a computer equipped with a support. A number of possible color image processing techniques are developed for calibrating color features of the camera and the CRT, analyzing the tongue properties, and compressing the tongue image data.
