Along with the emerging to unified global economical environment and the booming of knowledge economy, manufacturing industry must be reformed radically. Next Generation Manufacturing (NGM) has been researched by not only academic institutions but also enterprises. Its important aspects--distributed interactive virtual product development (VPD0 technique draw much attention, and become one of research focuses especially. This paper focuses on the following studies: the main characteristics of NGM, framework of VPD, the essence and key techniques of distributed interactive VPD. The R&D results in National CIMS ERC have been introduced with an example of the development of a rapier-loom, It points out that VPD is to be one of important field using modern simulation technique in the 21 st century.
