Machining processes are necessary to finish ceramic materials for precision parts generally, and grinding is usually adopted to improve surface finish, dimensional tolerances or impart a more complex shape. However, the strength of ground ceramics tend to be deteriorated due to flaws formed during grinding operations. This paper presents an attempt to recover the strength of ground ceramics by heating ceramic specimens in few minutes. The strength of heated ceramic specimens increases remarkably both for alumina ceramics and silicon nitride ceramics. Furthermore a simpler heating method using acetylene gas burner is also attempted, and sufficient recovery of ground ceramic specimens is obtained. Those methods will be applicable to improve reliability of mass production ceramic parts for mechanical use.
