The working surface profiles and its fractal dimensions of aluminum oxide grinding wheel are measured on the machine during grinding steels. By the result, it is found that the profiles have the fractal structure within the limited range of the dividing width in the divider stepping method. The dimension of the whole of the profile shows complex changes with progress of grinding. Then, to associate the change on the dimension with the working surface condition, the dimensions are measured from the profiles divided into the peripheral region and inside region of the wheel. The dimension of the peripheral region increases with progress of welding type loading at the cutting edges, and decreases with progress of dulling. On the other hand, the dimension of the inside region decreases with progress of deposit type loading at the chip pockets. Since the change of the dimension corresponds to the change of the working surface condition, there would be a possibility to monitor the working surface condition based on its fractal dimension.
