Large-Scale Fire Tests on Three Building Materials

The Fire Code Reform Centre (FCRC) has been established in Australia as an independent organisation to operate on a national basis to undertake a major program of fire code reform. The Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO, Australia) recently completed one FCRC project which looked at the need and basis for control of wall and ceiling linings. As part of that project, three wall and ceiling linings - plywood, fire-retarded plywood and paper-faced gypsum plasterboard - have been investigated in the ISO 9705 room fire test, a room/corridor fire test facility, and in small-scale tests such as the cone calorimeter and the Australian 'Early Fire Hazard Test' (one of the current test method used to regulate materials in Australia). The results of the various experiments are summarised in this paper.
