Direct output feedback control of soil-structure interaction systems

A methodology is developed in this paper to construct the direct output feedback control algorithm for soil-structure interaction (SSI) systems. The soil with frequency-dependent dynamic parameters is accurately represented by a frequency-independent lumped-parameter model consisting of a series of connected springs, dampers and masses. Even though the artificial internal degrees of freedom introduced by the lumped-parameter model can not be physically measured, the direct output feedback control law where only limited output measurements are required for the calculation of feedback control gain can be conveniently applied without any difficulty. After the lumped-parameter model for the soil is adopted to construct a frequency-independent discrete model for the whole SSI system and the limited states to measure are selected, constant control gains can be obtained applying an optimization process to minimize a prescribed performance index. Several representative SSI systems are examined in this study to demonstrate the control effectiveness of this algorithm.
