After the initial figuring process, the subsequent polishing process should be applied to generate aspherical surfaces. Therefore, a prototype of PC-based numerically controlled polishing machine was developed. Free movable mechanism to the vertical direction and simultaneous 2-axes linear interpolation hardware were made to trace the rotationally symmetric aspherical surface. A discrete dwell time control mode in which a polishing time was determined at a radial position was used. A PC controlled the tool-path while reading a NC file consisted of the dwell time, the polishing velocities and the geometry of the aspherical surface. To verify the machine structure and its tool-path algorithm, polishing for a roughly generated aspherical surface was performed. The results were found to be successful in acquiring the better figure and surface roughness.
