Gas fired radiant tubes are widely used inheat treating furnaces. The main emphasis of radianttube development in recent years has been:? increasing efficiency, mainly by combustion air preheating? lowering polluting from combustion sources, (mainly NOxwhen natural gas is burned)? improving temperature uniformity for better product qualityand radiant tube life? reducing furnace downtime and maintenance? increasing productivity? integrating the combustion system into the process controlsDue to high thermal loads, metal radiant tubes must bereplaced after a period of time, causing downtime, maintenance,and replacement costs. A new ceramic material, SiSiC(reaction bonded silicon carbide), has excellent oxidationstability even at temperatures above 1100 deg C, and its highconductivity and thermal shock resistance augment itssuitability as a material for radiant tubes and recuperators.
