SOLUBILITIES AND REDOX EFFECTS OF TRANSITION METALS IN AN ALUMINO-SILICATE WASTE-GLASS

Transition metals are common components of many waste streams, and an understanding of their effects on glass properties is essential to successful vitrification efforts. We have made an extensive study of the influence of transition metal oxide content and redox state on the properties of a multicomponent lime-aluminosilicate glass system adaptable to waste processing at 1450 deg C. Previously reported results have presented data on Time-Temperature-Transformation (TTT) behavior, kinetics of crystal growth, solubility and enthalpies of solution. Isothermal pseudoternary projections at 1450 deg C of the equilibrium phase field involving the transition metal oxides of Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn have been mapped and have revealed several interesting phenomena involving crystallization, solid solution in spinel phases, and redox effects. Questions raised in the course of this study have now been addressed in additional experiments and analysis, and the important results of the research have been assembled and corrected, where necessary, in this summary.
