Disposal of the Defense Logistics Agency thorium nitrate hydrate (ThNH) stockpile is currently under consideration. This paper describes a series of low-temperature (0-650 deg C) tests performed with TbNH only and with mixtures of ThNH and Ca(OH)_2 and ThNH and plastic to identify potential safety problems. Results from these tests reveal no significant reactions from TbNH only and or from ThNH mixed with Ca(OH)_2. In contrast, ThNH and plastic react exothermically and form a mushroom-like growth in the center of the mixture. The growth is preceded by fire and billowing smoke reminiscent of volcanic action. This observation is important in that it identifies a need for caution in attempting to convert whole drums of ThNH.
