Surface inspections are extremely cost-intensive and difficult to master, since a defect resolution of below 1 mm is called for. It is being investigated just how far the following surface defects, which are frequently encountered in industrial practice, can be detected and classified: dimensional deviations, sink marks, bubbles, flow defects, grooves, inclusion of foreign bodies, scratches, pores, cracks and colour. Spots the realization of high speed image processing algorithms in combination with fuzzy-logic led to a successful implementation in extrusion lines.
