Ultracapacitors based on high surface areas intrinsically conducting polymers have been fabricated and characterized. Poly(ethylene-dioxythiophene) and polyaniline, synthesized from commercially available monomers and catalysts, were made in the form of films and powders onto different substrates and current collectors. In this effort, we have focused on the use of liquid organic electrolytes in single-cell and multi-stack capacitors, and have defined the directions needed to achieve different capacitor designs based on their use as short time-scale power delivery or long time-scale energy storage devices.
