Separation of lead and cadmium from Cinkur Waelz oxide by chloridizing volatilization method

The possibility of separating lead and cadmium by using the chloridizing volatilization method from Cinkur Waelz oxide which contains 59.33 percent Zn, 12.97 percent Pb and 0.187 percent Cd was investigated in this study. Experiments were performed in a tube furnace under oxidizing atmosphere by using NaCl as the chloridizing agent. Temperature (900 to 1100 deg C), duration (1 to 4 hours) and NaCl addition (0 to 12 percent) were the main parameters studied. The results indicated that, lead and cadmium volatilized mainly in the form of lead chloride and cadmium chloride. The highest volatilization values for lead and cadmium were around 92 percent and 86 percent, respectively. These results were obtained at 1100 deg C with 12 prcent NaCl addition in 4 hours. They indicated that it was possible to obtain a leach residue with low lead and cadmium contents.
