Quantitative determination of the consequences of a pressure vessel failing should form part of the hazard assessment conducted prior to the testing of pressure vessels and experimental work. A method has been developed for the determination of possible fragment and supersonic shock generation during pressure vessel failure and the protection needed to contain them. The work here was undertaken to provide advice to the Uk Health and Safety Executive and will form the basis for the next edition of the High Pressure Technology Association's, High Pressure Safety Code.
