High power Ovonic NiMH batteries have been developed for a variety of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) applications. For range-extender HEV applications, the HEV-60 battery with a capacity of 60 Ah combines high power and high-energy performance. The power performance of 600 W/kg and 1400 W/L is coupled with an energy density of 68 Wh/kg. Comparable power performance of over 550 W/kg and 1200 W/L is provided in HEV-30 and HEV-20 modules, which have capacities of 30 and 20 Ah, respectively. These smaller batteries provide excellent performance for dualmode and power-assist type HEV applications. Ovonic NiMH batteries also exhibit superior acceptance of regenerative braking energy and essentially 100percent coulombic efficiency in HEV mode operation. In cycle life tests now underway, about 60,000 charge-discharge cycles in HEV mode (equivalent to 50,000 miles) have been achieved with no significant degradation in performance observed. The initial testing in full battery packs and hybrid electric vehicles confirms these excellent performance characteristics at the vehicle level.
