The EBHI Terminal, in which Gijon Port Authority has a 77 percent participation, is the most important lessee operating in the Port of Gijon. It is dedicated to dry bulk handling and has an annual throughput of around 10 million tonnes of iron ore, coal and zinc ore, which means that it accounts for 80-90 percent of the movement of goods through the Port of Gijon. It is dedicated to unloading, storage and transshipment. The terminal has an average occupancy rate of 60-70 percent. The concern of the Port Authority for the potential impact on the environment of the activities carried out in the Port led to an Environmental Study of the unloading terminal, aimed at formulating an array of environmental measures for EBHI that would subsequently constitute the starting point and core of the content of the environmental management system for the entire Port of Gijon. EBHI operations normally begin with the ship unloading operation. During this process, product may be spilled into the water or onto the quay, and dust may be generated from the grab, hopper or dosing conveyor.
