On the three commercial ports in Israel at Haifa, Ashdod and Eilat, only the two Mediterranean ports Haifa and Ashdod have major breakwater structures to provide protection to the berths. In the case of Eilat, situated at the northern end of the Bay of Aqaba, no artificial protection is needed. The Port of Haifa is situated at the southern end of Haifa Bay. It is semi-protected by Cape Carmel, the western end of the Mount Carmel formation. The original main breakwater with a length of 2.25 km was built in 1931. It was extended by 600 m during 1978/79 to provide protection to the newly constructed container or Eastern Quay. Rock armouring was used for both the original and the extension to the breakwater. Typical cross-sections of the original and the newer structure are shown in Figures A.1 and A.2.
