In the previous study we delivered insulin by transdermal iontophoresis using a photoetched microdevice. It was shown, however, that superoxide anions which were produced on the Pt electrode during the cathodic reaction and i8nduced skin damage. In the present study we tried to develop a new iontophoretic method for insulin which produced no reactive oxygen species. Cations and anions such as sodium and chloride ions were transdermally delivered first by iontophoresis prior to the iontophoresis of drugs (Preiontophoresis, PIP). We also examined the effects of PIP both on the percutaneous passive diffusion of model drugs and on the transport of insulin.
