The Conceptual Design of Emission Control Systems and Waste Heat Recovery Facilities for Direct Reduced Iron Rotary Hearth Furnaces The use of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) in the steel making process is receiving renewed interest due to shortages of recycled scrap and the need to improve raw material quality. Bricmont is currently designing and installing two of the world's first large Rotary Hearth Furnaces (RHF) for production of DRI. The commercialization of the DRI RHF requires the development of cost effective processes that control emissions of particulates, NO_x, SO_x and CO in a manner that maximizes energy utilization. Over the past three years Bricmont has developed processes for waste heat recovery (WHR) and control of emissions from the DRI RHF. Bricmont has derived processes to maximize the combustion efficiency in the DRI RHF to control emissions at the source. Bricmont has also developed add-on processes that have the potential of WHR, while controlling emissions. This presentation details several alternatives for treating the emissions from the DRI RHF. The economics of WHR by utilizing cogeneration processes is discussed. The presentation also discusses a variety of processes for controlling NO_x, SO_x, CO and particulate emissions from the DRI RHF.
