DICALCIUM SILICATE IN SPECIAL CEMENTS

Dicalcium silicate (belite) is the most abundant phase in Portland cement clinker after tricalcium silicate It can also be found in many special cements such as fast setting or fast hardening cements, calcium ferro-aluminate cements, calcium aluminate cements, low energy cements (belite cements ) and in many slags (BOF or steel slags) In this paper, we review the chemistry and mineralogy of dicalcium silicate in these special cements and we discuss its reactivity in the phase assemblages in comparison with belite in Portland cement. We highlight that the microtextural transformations observed in Portland cement can be only partially observed in special cements.
