This paper presents preliminary results from calculations of the flow field in a simplified model of a Francis runner. The model is intended to give the same average influence on the flow as the real runner in a simulation of a complete hydropower turbine. In the model, body forces replaced the runner blades. The model was compared to a simulation between two runner blades in a rotating coordinate system. The results from the simulations showed that the model gave a realistic velocity fieldin the runner but an improved approximation is necessary in order to get the correct pressure drop.
