A mechanistic process model of the ladle desulphurisation units at Corus IJmuiden was constructed, demonstrating he potential of this approach. The conversion of reactants, especially CaC_2, is poor. For CaC_2 this is to be attributed to the short residence time in the hot metal. As all magnesium injected will dissolve into the hot metal, low conversion rates relate to the sulphur mass transfer limitation towards the end of the process. Thus, a decrease of the feed rate of the reactants as the process proceeds will most likely result in large cost savings without affecting the final sulphur content.
